bye bye bye...

dear readers
It is with very heavy hearts that we say farewell. Over the last 4 years, in 28 issues, we have done our best to create a great magazine. We started with a real idea—that style is for everyone—and tried to carry it out with stories that provide inspiration and empower you to act on it. From your tremendous response, we know that we were onto something. In this tough economy, however, we simply weren't able to get the advertising support we needed. As domino evolved, we never lost sight of our original democratic premise. Looking back at the manifesto we published in the premiere issue, the first tenet of domino is still the truest: Home should make you happy. We hope we have played a part in making this come true for you.

a flicker of genius

while flipping through the february edition of house beautiful I stumbled across an assortment of candle sleeves from kaarskoker... I admit the idea seemed somewhat tacky at first but after navigating through their website the concept of adding a punch of color to otherwise mundane chandeliers & sconces proved (through the fabulous selection of pictures) to be quite charming...
below are a few of my favs:

quote of the day...

"Flair is a primitive kind of style. It is innate and cannot be taught. It can be polished and refined. When a person has flair, a grounding in the principle of design, and self-discipline, that person has the potential of being an outstanding designer."

pics & pointers from mary mcdonald

below are a few new ideas for customizing your home off the domino website from mary mcdonald
her attention to detail and tailored style create impeccable yet quirky spaces.... inspiration!
12 ways to customize your decor:
1. Paint a sisal rug. Sick of your sisal? Has it gotten too dirty? Paint it.
2. Improvise stripes. Don't be afraid to paint stripes one by one.
3. Wallpaper the ceiling. A metallic paper reflects light and lends unexpected flair to a room with neutral walls.
4. Cover the chandelier. It's the little details that make a room feel really finished. Match your cord cover to the room's accessories to tie everything together.
5. Stencil the floors.

6. Add architecture. Nailing molding to the walls can create architecture in an undistinguished space.
7. Create a canopy. An ordinary bed becomes the stately canopy bed of your dreams when you hang curtains around it and paint the ceiling above it.
8. Make an entryway majestic.
9. Add color with curtains.
10. Embellish your upholstery. Adding trim, like a classic Greek key, lends couches and pillows a tailored feel.
11. Go beyond artwork.
12. Nothing has to be ugly. Example: Gluing on a blown-up copy of a favorite chinoiserie lends a considered touch.
